WHAT IS QUILLING?
Quilling, also known as paper filigree, dates back to the Renaissance, when nuns and monks used narrow strips of paper to decorate religious objects as an affordable alternative to gold filigree. By rolling, shaping, and gluing the paper, they created intricate ornamental designs that echoed the metalwork of the time. Over the centuries, quilling evolved beyond religious settings and became popular in 18th- and 19th-century Europe, before experiencing a modern revival as a contemporary paper art form celebrated for its precision, delicacy, and creative expression.
